Science

The key aim of the science department at Huxlow School is to help students to acquire the necessary skills they will need to positively contribute to an increasingly scientific and technological society and particularly to access new innovative science roles when they move into work.
To enable this, the department provides a range of different activities and experiences as part of the curriculum offering, to provide students a broad range of skills that they will learn to apply to different scientific scenarios. These include, the use of technology in the classroom to complete interactive assignments, on-line homework, access to on-line course text books that can be annotated by each individual and vast resources to revise and prepare for their GCSE examinations. This is coupled with practicing what has been learnt by completing relevant experiments and presenting results and analysis in a scientific way.
In addition to the offering in the classroom, there is a range of enrichment available that includes STEM visits, for example, to Silverstone, introduction to medical careers and an extra-curricular science club.

At KS3, students follow a scheme of work that aligns with the national curriculum. The purpose of this stage, is to build solid foundations of understanding that can then be built upon in KS4.

Students learn the key concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics including Cells, Particles, Forces and Energy. Their progress is monitored in the form of both formative and summative assessment with detailed feedback enabling students to continually improve and prepare for KS4.

At KS4, students follow the AQA Combined Science Trilogy scheme of work, which includes Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They also have the option to study these topics in more depth through selection of Triple Science, where students sit three separate GCSE’s rather than two combined GCSEs. Whichever science route is chosen, students will benefit from experienced teachers who can provide targeted support both inside and outside of the classroom. There are a range of key required practicals that students will undertake and write up fully to broaden understanding of key concepts. There are also teacher demonstrations which inspire and build engagement to the curriculum.

At the end of Year 11 students take 6 examinations. The science department is committed to provide quality after school revision sessions for students to attend to help them prepare for these important examinations.
